What Shopify Themes Cost in 2026: A 20-Theme Price Sample

We pulled the price tag off 20 well-known Theme Store listings, first-party and third-party, and the sample says: free or roughly $300-500, with surprisingly little in between.

Theme Store pricing is oddly hard to see whole: the store shows prices one listing at a time, and roundup articles quote ranges nobody sourced. So we did the small honest version of the exercise: pick 20 themes people actually shop for, open all 20 listings, write down the number next to the buy button. A sample, not a census, and labeled as such.

The sample

Twenty well-known themes were selected across first-party and major third-party vendors and their Theme Store listings were read on July 15, 2026. The price recorded is the single unambiguous figure displayed on the listing's own header, next to the trial and purchase controls, in USD. Every listing in the sample displayed exactly one such price, so nothing had to be excluded as unclear. Free first-party themes are counted at $0. The sample skews popular; it is not a random draw from the full catalog.

The shape of the market

Where 20 theme prices fall Number of themes per price band, July 2026 sample 3 4 0 6 7 Free $100-199 $200-299 $300-399 $400-500 Prices read from each theme's official listing, July 15, 2026. Chart: Commerce Quarterly.
The empty $200-299 band is the sample's most interesting finding: vendors either undercut hard or price with the pack.

The distribution has a hole in the middle. Established vendors cluster tightly: Archetype’s four themes sit at $420-500, Maestrooo’s three at $320-400, and the independents (Clean Canvas, Apparent Collective, Safe As Milk, NextSky) all price inside $300-420. Below them sits one deliberate outlier: UTD prices half its catalog at $100-160, undercutting the mainstream by two-thirds, while its newer listings (Victory $320, Impression $340) price with the pack. Nobody in the sample chose the $200s.

The $0 rows deserve their own note: Shopify’s free themes are not lesser goods but a different vendor strategy entirely, covered in our free-theme census. The practical comparison for a merchant is not free versus $400; it is which built-in features a paid theme replaces that a free theme would rent monthly as apps.

How to read a one-time price

Because themes are bought once, the sticker comparison against apps is unfair to the theme. A $380 theme amortized over even two years is under $16 a month, less than a single mid-tier feature app, and the paid median of $380 sits well within the “one to two replaced apps” payback zone. The better question than “is $400 too much for a theme” is “which recurring line items does this purchase delete.” Meanwhile the $100 cluster makes the entry decision easier than it used to be: the cheapest paid tier of the official store now costs about three months of a typical app, not a year.

We will repeat this sample quarterly with the same 20 listings, which will also show something this snapshot cannot: whether theme prices are drifting up the way app prices have.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify theme cost?

In our July 2026 sample of 20 popular Theme Store listings: $0 for Shopify's own themes, and $100 to $500 one-time for paid themes, with a paid-theme median of $380. There is no subscription; updates from the same vendor are included.

Are Shopify theme prices one-time or recurring?

One-time. You buy the theme once per store and receive the vendor's updates. That makes themes one of the few store costs that does not compound monthly, which changes the comparison against $15-30/month feature apps.

Why are some themes only $100 when most cost $300-plus?

In our sample the under-$200 cluster comes from one vendor, UTD, pricing at $100-160 while established vendors like Archetype and Maestrooo price at $320-500. All of them passed the same Theme Store review; the difference is vendor strategy, not a different approval bar.

Is this the average price of all Shopify themes?

No. The official store lists hundreds of themes and we priced 20 well-known ones, so these medians describe the popular end of the catalog. A full-store census would need every listing and is a different exercise.
