A side-by-side read of the actual countdown timer schema in Gain and Impression shows the gap is not whether the feature exists but how many settings surround it, which the search term 'shopify countdown timer theme' never tells you on its own.
Typing “shopify countdown timer theme” into a search bar gets you marketing pages that all say yes, this theme has one. That answer is almost always true and almost always useless, because the real question a merchant should be asking is how many other settings that timer drags along with it, whether it lives in its own named section or buried inside a general banner block, and what it defaults to the moment the theme is installed. Gain and Impression, both published by UTD, are a good pair to settle this against, because they use the same underlying file but structure the feature differently enough to matter.
Across the seven themes UTD publishes in the Shopify Theme Store, Allure, Boutique, Fuse, Gain, Impression, Ultra and Victory, the countdown timer is not a single uniform feature. It comes in three schema shapes. Allure, Fuse and Impression use a checkbox field called enable_timer, found in sections/banner.liquid, and it is off by default in all three. Boutique, Gain and Ultra instead use a select field called timer_type, defaulting to the value end_date, which implies the countdown always counts down toward a specific date rather than just switching on or off. Victory uses a third name, enable_countdown_timer, again a checkbox defaulting to off, also inside sections/banner.liquid. Ultra’s version lives in a differently named file, sections/banner-animation-heading.liquid, rather than the plain banner.liquid the others use.
None of the seven ships the timer turned on by default. A merchant installing any of these themes has to find the setting and flip it themselves, whether that means checking a box or picking a timer type from a dropdown.
The field name is only part of the story. Each countdown setting sits inside a cluster of other settings tied to the same section, and that cluster size varies by a wide margin. Ultra has 74 settings grouped with its timer_type field, the largest of the seven. Boutique follows at 67, and that theme is also the only one of the seven to pair the field with a dedicated named section in the editor, called Countdown banner, backed by its own file, sections/countdown-banner.liquid. Victory sits at 41, Gain at 48, Impression at 20, Fuse at 35, and Allure has the smallest cluster at 11.
A larger settings count is not automatically better. It usually means more styling controls, more layout options, more text fields for the countdown’s labels, which can be useful or can just mean more fields to click through before the timer looks right.
Checking the published demo for each theme against a simple text marker search gives a second, independent read on the feature, separate from what the schema allows. On October 15, 2026, a marker search for countdown across the homepage, collection page and product page found the marker present on all three page types in Ultra, Boutique, Victory and Impression. The same search against Gain’s demo store, gain-demo2-store.myshopify.com, did not turn up a countdown marker on the pages checked that day. That reflects how that specific demo happens to be configured at this snapshot, not a limitation of the Gain theme code, since Gain’s timer_type field is present in sections/banner.liquid with the same 48-setting cluster regardless of whether any particular demo store has switched it on.
This is the difference between reading a theme’s code and reading one live configuration of it. The code tells you what is possible. The demo tells you what one merchant, in this case UTD’s own demo setup, chose to show on one day.
| Theme | Field name | Type | Default | File | Settings nearby |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Allure | enable_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 11 |
| Boutique | timer_type | select | end_date | sections/banner.liquid | 67 |
| Fuse | enable_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 35 |
| Gain | timer_type | select | end_date | sections/banner.liquid | 48 |
| Impression | enable_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 20 |
| Ultra | timer_type | select | end_date | sections/banner-animation-heading.liquid | 74 |
| Victory | enable_countdown_timer | checkbox | off | sections/banner.liquid | 41 |
Boutique is the one theme among the seven with a separate named editor section specifically for the countdown, Countdown banner, on top of the field inside its general banner section. The other six keep the timer as part of the broader banner block rather than giving it its own named entry in the section list a merchant sees in the theme editor.
If the goal is a countdown that comes with the fewest extra fields to learn, Allure’s 11-setting cluster is the simplest starting point among the seven. If the goal is a countdown with its own named section separate from general banner content, Boutique is the only one of UTD’s seven themes built that way. Gain sits in the middle of the pack at 48 settings and uses the date-driven timer_type pattern rather than a plain on-off checkbox, which fits a merchant running an actual sale countdown rather than a generic announcement. Check the field name and file path against the version number before installing, since UTD has changed the pattern across its own catalog more than once.
Yes. Gain 4.3.1 defines `timer_type`, a select field labeled Choose date, inside sections/banner.liquid, and it defaults to end_date. The setting sits among 48 other settings tied to the same banner section, which is the largest count among the three themes that use the timer_type pattern. The October 15, 2026 demo snapshot of the Gain store did not show the countdown marker on the pages checked that day, but that reflects how that particular demo is configured, not whether the setting exists in the theme code.
They are two different schema patterns UTD uses across its seven themes. Allure, Fuse and Impression use a checkbox called `enable_timer` that is off by default. Boutique, Gain and Ultra use a select field called `timer_type` defaulting to end_date, which assumes the timer is tied to a specific end date rather than being a simple on-off toggle. Victory uses a third variant, `enable_countdown_timer`, also a checkbox defaulting to off.
Ultra 2.3.4, with 74 settings around `timer_type` in sections/banner-animation-heading.liquid. Boutique follows at 67, and Gain sits in the middle at 48. Allure has the fewest at 11, and Impression sits at 20.
Boutique is the only one of the seven with a named, separate editor section for it, called Countdown banner, backed by sections/countdown-banner.liquid, in addition to the timer_type field inside sections/banner.liquid. The other six themes keep the countdown logic as part of the general banner section rather than giving it its own named block in the editor.
The Shopify Theme Store listing for each theme shows preview images but not the settings schema, so the only way to see the actual field names and defaults is to open a theme's code export or demo store editor. The demo stores named for each theme in this piece, checked October 15, 2026, give a reasonable second-best view of how the timer renders once enabled.
